Satisfied with this prologue, Klondaeg took one last gulp of ale. He daintily wiped the corner of his mouth with his beard (he was in a god’s company, after all) and slammed the mug back down on the table.

“Even as a teenager, I—”

Acerbus held up a hand and hushed him. “I caught all that,” said the god, tapping a finger to his temple. “Your mortal mind is like a window to me, and I’m like a rich man strolling through the villages gazing into the houses of lesser people and rejoicing in my superiority, all the while wishing I were back at my own far more interesting house.” He faked a cough as an excuse to cover his smirk with a hand.

“Sounds like something Lux would say,” said Klondaeg.

“Watch it,” said Acerbus. “So did you ever find out what really did kill your parents?”

“No. The kings told me it was monsters, but they never knew what kind. The mines and old cities are full of monsters. I’m sure you know all about that, since you put most of them there. It dawned on me that I had been taking revenge against rats like a chump that whole time, so I started looking for more relevant beasts to hunt.

“The kings allowed me to travel with them wherever they went. Apparently, having a monster hunter on staff does wonders for your ability to recruit allies. Dexter and Sinister kept telling everyone that a war was coming, and that their servant Klondaeg would slay whatever they asked him to, so long as they pledged their support. Best five years of my life.”

“Who was the war against?” asked the Dark One.

“For the longest time, they wouldn’t tell me or anyone else. Wars are hard to keep secret, though.”
